Neighbourhood description...
The district Eixample is often divided for practical purposes in two parts - Esquerra de l'Eixample and Dreta de l'Eixample (left and right sides of Eixample, respectively). The sides referring to their position relative to the Passeig de Gracia, one of the city's two most cosmopolitan avenues. The other is Las Ramblas that runs through the old town of Ciutat Vella that can be easily reached by metro or frequent public transport.
Eixample is rather well-to-do neighbourhood, especially around the central areas such as Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Cataluña and the Avenue Gaudi/Sagrada Familia vicinity. Traditionally popular with the rich and famous, the district also has a significant immigrant population.
Passeig de Gracia is an important commercial artery of the city; it overflows with boutiques, deluxe shops and world known franchises. Take a Tombus (special shop bus) that follows the shopping route of Barcelona.
Architecturally, Eixample is famed for its modernist buildings, many designed by one of the world's most original architects, Antonio Gaudi. His art nouveau architecture is exemplified the delightful Sagrada Familia church, started in 1882 and still not finished, and the entire area is rich in other 'modernista' work and a heaven for lovers of architecture. You must also visit the Casa Mila, also by Gaudi, designed in the biomorphism style decades before the term was used for this style of architecture. Also named La Pedrera (The Quarry), the house is open to the public and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antonio Gaudí".
Frequent public transport will take you to the centre of the city just in few minutes so that you also can explore Las Ramblas avenue and old city neighbourhoods -Barrio Gotico, El Borne and Raval.
At Passeig de Gracia you can also take a train that gets you to the El Prat airport in 20 minutes.
