Opium Mar - restaurant - lounge - disco

Opium Mar is situated where the famous Baja Beach club used to be. When I heard the powers were going to close down Baja Beach club and open a new modern club I must admit I was sceptical. Baja Beach had a winning formula of waiters and waitresses wearing next to nothing serving body shots to eager tourists and stag/hen parties. A new posh club will never work I thought to myself. How wrong I was!
Opium Mar has basically taken over the clubbing scene in Barcelona and it’s the only place to go especially if you are going for a night out by Barcelona’s Port Olympic area.
I must warn you it is not the easiest club to get into. Girls seem to always get in but the guys must dress well. So leave your Bermuda shorts and sleeveless T-shirt at home. I always wear my expensive clothes just to ensure there are no problems on the door. Although it is a club and traditionally no one in Spain goes to clubs before 2.30 am I would advise getting there early. If you leave it too late expect to queue for 30 minutes at least- I usually arrive around 1.30 am. Also there are many promoters nearby so get some invitations before you start queuing to guarantee entrance and possibly free entrance. The official entry price is 15 Euros with a drink.
I really like the layout of the club: the decor is modern/minimalist and works really well. There are 6 bars in total and a waiter service in the terrace and 2 VIP sections. I haven’t personally been in the VIP but a bottle of champagne and some soft drinks go for around 150 Euros. In general the drinks prices are a little expensive but that’s expected from a club catering for tourists and locals. 10 Euros for a long drink and 6 Euros for a bottle of beer. The bar staff in general are efficient and cocktails are also on offer. I did have dinner once at Opium Mar and it was an enjoyable experience. There’s something special about eating a nice light Mediterranean meal on a terrace over-looking the beach at sun set.
Opium Mar have different club nights each day of the week from hip hop on Mondays to commercial dance on Saturdays and also R&B, lounge and deep house. However, Opium Mar have raised the bar and now contract big name DJs like David Guetta, Bob Sinclair and DJ Tiesto. I went to the Dj Tiesto and David Guetta parties and they were quite good. I expected a little more and the club was not packed to capacity which was surprising but the Djs performed and everyone seemed to be happy.
Opium Mar should definitely be on your list of clubs to visit. The capacity is around 3000 people. There is a real party atmosphere with a good looking crowd. The dance floor is very big and the 2 terraces offer a nice breath of fresh air after a few hours on the dance floor. I´ll be going there a lot this summer so hope to see you for a few drinks on the terrace.
